When it comes to homemade products, people tend to be more aware now than ever. The concern with what manufacturers actually put in our food has grown rapidly over the years, which is why there are more and more manufacturers that sell food under the label of ‘healthy food,’ or ‘organic food.’ I am not saying that is a bad thing. Quite the contrary. I am pleased to know that people start to put more accent on having a healthy lifestyle. However, you can do that yourself as well.
You don’t have to rely on some manufacturer to provide organic food. You can do it at home if you like. I am not saying that you should immediately start gardening your own vegetables or something. I am just saying that whenever you have the chance, don’t cut corners. And that brings me to the point, which is grain mills.
Grain mills are devices that will help you make your own flour (and many other things.) Yes, you could buy it from the store, but by that principle, you can buy everything from the store. There is a real difference between store-bought flour and a homemade one, and if you ever have the chance, please try it and see for yourself. But I am going to try and convince you that you should buy your own grain mill.
Grain mills may seem expensive. Not everyone can afford a 200$ grain mill. However, in the long run, you actually save money, and that is an idea many people don’t get. The flour you buy at the store is not very expensive, but how much of it do you actually use and how much you throw away? Flour spoils quite rapidly, and once it’s gone, there isn’t much you can do with it. But owning a grain mill means you can make as much flour as you need. If you need two cups, then two cups you can make. Whole grain can stay in storage for 30 years, as opposed to flour which lasts between 1 and 3 months.
Types of grain mills
You don’t lack option when it comes to grain mills. There are plenty of them on the market. The point is to know what you want. There are several types. The difference between them is the power source and milling mechanism.
When it comes to the source of energy, there are three types of grain mills. You have the manual mill, the electric mill, and the convertible mill.
A manual mill is meant for people who are energetic and have a lot of strength. That is because the milling requires quite the manpower. They look very elegant on the countertop of your kitchen, but unless you are committed, I suggest you buy an electric grain mill.
An electric mill is the most convenient there is. Making flour requires you pushing a button. You take it out, make the flour, clean it, and then put it back in the cupboard. The whole process does not take very long, and the electric grain mill does an excellent job. The only drawback is that you cannot use it when the power goes out. But let’s be honest, how often does that happen? And what are the chances of happening while you are milling?
The convertible mill seemslike an excellent choice. That is because it’s electric, but when there is no power, you can go manual. Nothing wrong with that. However, very few models make the switch elegantly. And not all of them can function properly in both modes. I think that it’s better to choose one mode and stick with it.
I have to admit that my favorite grain mill is the electric one. A lot of people have the same preference. That is because it’s convenient and there is no effort.
As far as the milling mechanism goes, there are two kinds of grain mills. The burr mill and the impact mill. The burr mill is the most common. It has two grinding plates, one is static, and the other is rotated by a power source. The grain enters the space between the two plates, and depending on the material that the plates are made of, the grain is either crushed or broken. The impact mill, on the other hand, uses two flat stainless steel heads with concentric rows of ‘teeth.’ The heads spin at high speeds within eachother. The grain falls between the two heads and is hammered. This mechanism is more efficient than the previous one, and it can produce extra fine flour.

Although some people claim that it is silly, a whole lot more of them use a grain mill on a regular basis. That is because this simple device has real benefits. Here are a few.
- ü Shelf-life – the whole grain flour you buy at the store spoils very quickly. Moreover, you never know how much time it spent on the shelf. I mentioned it before, but I am going to say it again. Flour can last from 1 to 3 months in a cold pantry, and up to 6 months in a freezer. But wheat berries can last 30 years if they are stored properly.
- ü You have plenty of options – I know that I focused on flour until now, but a grain mill can be used for grinding something else other than wheat. You can also grind beans, quinoa, rice, corn, oats, etc. You don’t have to be limited to a single thing.
- ü Texture- when you make your own flower, you get to control the texture. Usually, grain mills come with an adjustability feature that will allow you to make coarse or fine flour. It’s up to you.
- ü Flavor – I know that it probably doesn’t make too much sense (and it won’t until you try,) put people actually prefer the taste of homemade flour, rather than the flavor of the store-bought flour.

Moreover, you will have more control over your weight, your carotid arteries will be healthier, your blood pressure levels will be stable, and your gums and teeth will be well kept.
